How does the Hijri date converter work?
The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the astronomically calculated Islamic calendar used officially in Saudi Arabia. Choose the direction, enter the day, month and year, and you get the matching date and weekday instantly, with nothing sent to any server.
Important: the start of Islamic months used for worship, such as Ramadan, the two Eids and Hajj, is confirmed by sighting the new moon and official announcements, so it can differ from the calculated calendar by a day. Use this tool for planning and follow official announcements for worship.
Hijri year vs. Gregorian year
The Hijri year is lunar: each month has 29 or 30 days and the year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and Hajj move about 11 days earlier every year and pass through every season in roughly 33 years.
The Hijri calendar was adopted in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, counting from the Prophet's ﷺ migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah, with Muharram as its first month.
