The closing verses of the Quran’s longest surah, beginning with “Amana ar-Rasul”. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites them at night, they will suffice him.
285The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.”
286Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”
Verse 286 ends with supplications the believers make. Sahih Muslim reports that Allah answered these prayers: with “Yes” in the narration of Abu Hurayrah, and with “I have done so” in the narration of Ibn ‘Abbas. Tap a prayer to see its answer.
Sources: Sahih Muslim 125 (Abu Hurayrah), with “Yes” after all four prayers; and Sahih Muslim 126 (Ibn ‘Abbas), with “I have done so” after the first, second and fourth. The third is not mentioned in his narration.
Whoever recites the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.
Narrated by Abu Mas‘ud al-Badri. Agreed upon: Sahih al-Bukhari 5009, Sahih Muslim 808. Scholars explained “suffice him” as protection from harm that night.
Mark tonight once you have recited them. The night begins at sunset.
Verse 285 describes the faith of the Prophet ﷺ and the believers in Allah, His angels, His books and all His messengers without distinction, followed by obedience and a request for forgiveness.
Verse 286 establishes that Allah never burdens a soul beyond its capacity, then teaches the prayers above. Full Arabic tafsir: 2:285 · 2:286
